Ivan Rodriguez Retirement

It seems you can go home again. Even if it is to hang up the spikes.

Tonight, after 21 professional seasons, Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez returned to the place where it all started to say goodbye. The 14 time All-star announced his retirement in Arlington, Texas, and threw out the first pitch before the Rangers-Yankees game.

Rodriguez, a natural behind the plate with one of the strongest arms ever seen, caught a major league record 2,427 games. In his heyday, baserunners were more likely to order a hotdog at first base then attempt to steal second. To say opponents respected “Pudge” is an understatement.

Rodriguez was more than just a defensive backstop though. According to CBSSports, “Rodriguez hit .296 with 311 home runs and 1,332 RBI in 2,543 games overall with Texas (1991-2002, 2009), Florida (2003), Detroit (2004-08), the Yankees (2008), Houston (2009), and Washington (2010-11). His 13 Gold Gloves were the most for a catcher.”

The next stop for Ivan “Pudge” Rodriguez? Cooperstown.
