Repo’s Picks the AFC Winners

It’s finally that time! Are you ready for some football??? The season kicks off tomorrow with the defending Super Bowl Champion New York Giants opening against their arch rival Dallas Cowboys. Much is being written about the defending champs, including the very real possibility that they may not make the playoffs this year. A new year brings new possibilities; who do you think will win it all?
Check out our AFC predictions (division winners in bold; wildcard in italics):
AFC East
- New England Patriots
- Buffalo Bills
- New York Jets
- Miami Dolphins
Summary: The Patriots win this division again, although Buffalo will challenge and could make a run. In the end, Tom Brady is simply too much, having conditioned these teams to take a beating every year. The Jets have no running game and no QB; they could very easily switch places with Miami.
AFC North
- Baltimore Ravens
- Cincinnati Bengals
- Pittsburgh Steelers
- Cleveland Browns
Summary: This might be the toughest division in football, and we are predicting, count ‘em, three playoff teams from the AFC North. Pity the Browns, who should be improved and will still struggle to win 6 games. Baltimore gets the edge thanks to Ray Rice and that smothering DST, but the Bengals and Steelers will be right there in case they stumble. This division should feature the hard hitting, smash mouth football fans are sure to love. Will they beat each other up too much to make a serious run at the Super Bowl?
AFC South
- Houston Texans
- Tennessee Titans
- Indianapolis Colts
- Jacksonville Jaguars
Summary: The South is a tough division to call, as the Titans are one Matt Schaub/ Andre Johnson dual injury away from taking it. If Jake Locker grows into his role quickly, they can easily flip-flop with the Texans. That’s not to discount Houston, who is loaded and should be able to win this division if they take care of business. Unfortunately, their paper mache QB makes them a weak favorite. The Colts will be interesting, but no threat of being a factor. The “suck-fest” that is Jacksonville continues…
AFC West
- Kansas City Chiefs
- Oakland Raiders
- San Diego Chargers
- Denver Broncos
Summary: Mark it down: the Chiefs will run away with this division, big time. I’m talking 11 wins big. KC has an underrated defense, a stud WR (Bowe), stud RB (Charles), and an underrated QB (Cassel). The rest of this division is bi-polar,at best. The Raiders have potential, but their QB can best be described with a single word: BAD. San Diego has no proven WRs and a fragile Ryan Matthews at RB. Philip Rivers will be running and gunning all season, likely completing just as many passes to the other team as to his own. The Broncos? They’ll be a good story until the inevitable Manning injury. Then, they will suck. No flowery language needed.
Our Super Bowl Pick?
That’s right, the Chiefs. Mark it down and call your momma. KC has the best chance to come out of division play unscathed and should make a deep playoff run.

In my mind, Houston would have made it to the Super Bowl last year had Matt Schaub been healthy, so I’m going to step out on a sturdy limb with the Texans to win it all this season. This is not a pick made with full confidence. When is it ever? Schaub, and, of course, Andre Johnson must be fully healthy down the stretch for Houston to go all the way. I really like the 49ers in the NFC. Everyone seems to forget what Alex Smith did against the Saints in the final minute in the divisional playoffs last season. He’s not going to be Drew Brees , but he will be better than last season. San Francisco’s great defense, superior running game and an improved passing game give it the look of a team that can make it all the way to New Orleans. I do know one thing: The 49ers will have a much harder road to the Super Bowl than any of the strong AFC teams. A consensus of people I talk with in the league believe that the NFC is by far the tougher conference.
